PPP//Who Are you

For my double spread i have been looking at the interview we did with each other and trying to find some links out to things which could produce some imagery for the DPS/style i could work with. I have also looked at her blog at some of her work to look at the style of work she likes to work within.

Throughout the interview we did she mentioned a few times about different decades and wanting to go back in time to experience these specifically the 60's. So i am going to use this element within the DPS, using 60's patterns and designs for the style of the DPS.
I also looked at her work which the last project we did - 100 things she did work on the 60's too so i think using this will be a good idea for sure. I think i am going to do some of design for her in this sort of style using her favourite designer as inspiration - Mark Weaver.

For the rest of the DPS i am going to do it as a sort of profile on kathryn, adding extra questions in which i have made up from looking at things on her blog. The title of the spread is going to be 'getting to know kathryn brooks'

Designs
For the double page spread i am working on for my partner i picked out a couple of things from the interview which i thought would be good to incorporate in the double page spread.

60's theme - illustration
I have done a quick 60's style pattern that i could use within the spread.
I started with this idea, using the simple pattern on the inside and having the title working within the pattern. The pattern is meant to be like an eye because the spread is about getting a closer insight on kathryn, so the imagery of an eye came to mind when i thought of this, the style of it is meant to be like a 60's pattern and I've used colours from the 60's too.

I thought the one above was too simple and was lacking more detail, so i expanded the pattern to create this, which i think is better but I'm not sure if its too much?

Experimenting with colour and changing the design slightly, I'm not too convinced with this one really.

I need to experiment with the pattern more, but i am happy with the initial idea and incorporating the title into the design too.

We had another indesign workshop this week, which i played around with the pattern more trying to get the right balance with the colour and the actual pattern

I decided on this pattern being the best and then looked at different type for the title and main headings. Out of these three here i prefer the first one, i like this because the type is a lot nicer, it works with the pattern well and it more readable all together.

Layout
For the actual layout of the DPS i wanted to keep it  quite simple and clean, but yet still have the vibe of the 60's throughout.
To start with i drew out some designs for the layout
insert design sheet

After this i did some quick knock ups of some on illustrator with one of the pattern designs to see how it would work out.

At first i was going to use the pattern as a background image and repeat it, to create a pattern for the whole page, but now I've expanded the pattern and using it more as a design for the page it wouldn't work in that way. The ones above are some different experiments of placement of the design. I have used the lines coming off it to link it into the next page. My favourites are the first one and the last one, with the first one I'm sure about the type at the top so i decided i like the last one the best. The type is the main information i thought was relevant about kathryn, because the interview i have done is split into personal questions and design questions i wanted to compare the two in this little section too.

I added some text for where the interview would lay and above i thought it would be good to include some of her own work, maybe the 60's themed work to tie in with the rest of the layout.
Again the image on the left isn't the final one, i was just using it as a placement object.

This is the final layout with the right pattern on the main page, this is a quick view of the layout which i did in illustrator, just to get the point of it across.

From the illustrator layout, i took it into indesign and created the proper layout, all i need to do now is insert the text and get some images of kathryns work!

Colour Variations
Now i have the final layout and have put all the content within it, i am going to start to look at the colours within the layout.
For the interview section i want to seperate the question and answer by using colour.

Here i have looked at using the different blues within the illustration on the DPS, i feel that the middle blue works the best because it is dark enough to stand out on the page and it is the most readable of the three.

Full section of writing in the right colour

Second section of writing in the right colour.

To sperate the two interviews i wanted to have a title put at the side of the text to make it more interesting and so it doesn't use up any of the space for the interview. I was looking at using different colours. For this i did have limited colours i could use because the questions are in the dark blue, there is the purple line which i want to carry on and underline the heading.
Title in light blue, this works with the purple well, but i don't think it fits with the dark blue of the interview question.

Title in the pale yellow, this again works nicely with the purple underlining and fits in well with the interview question. It is less legible than the blue, but i don't want it to stand out, i want it to be slightly faded within the DPS, so you can see it, but not so its the first thing your eye sees, so i think this one fits the best.

Colour Variations of the illustration page

Originally i had the two headings below in the same colour which was the purple, i choose this colour because i didn't want to introduce another colour into the DPS as there already is 3, so i chose from the colours that had been used already. This stands out and works well, as there isn't a lot of purple within the illustration it fits nicely one the page and looks balanced, it picks out the purple in the illustration.

Trying the headings in the dark blue, again this does stand out in the page and is readable, but as there is a lot of blue within the illustration, i feel that is overpowers this colour and the page looks unbalanced as there is too much of one colour; blue.

Sticking with the blue, on the second heading i lowered the opacity, because the two heading are supposed to show Kathryn's main information about each section of the interview, so using that at different opacities splits these and shows the comparison between them. But again i don't think it looks right with the blue, because there is too much of it within this page and the DPS as a whole.

Mixing the two colours up, this on it own doesn't work, the two colours don't work together the best and then with the illustration introduced to the page it makes it even worse, so i defiantly don't like this design.

With this one i used the purple colours again, but using the different opacities to separate the two headings. I think that this works the best, as it balances out the majority of the blue and picks out the purple in the illustration. This is my favourite out of them all.

Final DPS

Final DPS for the task, i need to make sure i have got the details right on it, but other than that all the content and layout of the spread is done.
I am happy with this DPS as i feel as though it uses the 60's theme and conveys this across within the illustration. It is a clean and simple layout, which i like, it makes it easy to follow and read.
